Amit Shah committed Demonetization scam !
Call it a real or a fake scandal, but the newest charge in the town is that BJP President Amit Shah has swindled funds to the tune of Rs. 745 crores in the wake of the November-December 2016 demonetization period.
Going into the details of the allegations, the cooperative bank whose director Shah is, had converted old notes worth Rs. 745 crores in just five days. "Congratulations Amit Shah ji, Director, Ahmedabad Dist. Cooperative Bank, on your bank winning 1st prize in the conversion of old notes to new race. 750 Cr in 5 days! Millions of Indians whose lives were destroyed by Demonetisation, salute your achievement," Rahul Gandhi has tweeted sarcastically.
Because cooperative banks are prone to be misused by local power wielders, the RBI didn't allow them to accept demonetized notes during the entire DeMo period. Only a five-day window was provided to them to accept the deposits.
With the Congress saying that the BJP has scammed the system with the help of Amit Shah, a counter-argument is that the Ahmedabad District Cooperative Bank's size is large enough to warrant the huge exchange. The bank is "one of the top ten DCCBs of the country," says columnist Nupur Sharma. "It has a total of 194 branches, the highest among all the DCCBs of Gujarat," she adds.
Given the if's and but's, will the Congress's allegations stick? Only time will tell.
