Bengal shocks with political violence

Panchayat polls are on today in West Bengal.  And horrible levels of political violence has been reported from the state.  Most of these are happening under the watch of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.   As columnist Anand Ranganathan said, "Bengal is burning; polling booths captured; voters intimidated; journalists attacked, many hospitalized; reporters hounded; news agencies bullied."

Opposition parties in the state, like the BJP, have slammed the government.  Ram Madhav of the BJP said, "What is happening in West Bengal should awaken and bother every democrat. Not just BJP, but all the opposition parties have complained against the ruling TMC-sponsored violence. It is all over in media and social media. Sadly, the ruling TMC’s response is heartless and disparaging."

Faye D' Souza said, "This entire election must be cancelled and fresh elections must be held under the supervision of Central forces and central EC. The state Govt of West Bengal has made a mockery of democracy and the entire process of free and fair elections!"
