Bollywood's Pakistan audiences decide matters!
IIM-A professor Dheeraj Sharma once watched 'Bajrangi Bhaijaan' and found that most Indians were presented as narrow-minded and most Pakistans as open-minded in this film. This made the Professor explore several Bollywood films. He found that in "20 Bollywood movies that had Pakistan as the setting, Pakistanis were projected as welcoming, courteous, open-minded and courageous" in 18.
In the very same movies wherein the Pakistani government was projected as jingoistic, "Indians were largely projected as narrow-minded, unwelcoming, and conservative."
What explains this pro-Pakistan sentiment in Bollywood films? "I do understand economics driving such decisions. There are approximately potential 180 million viewers of Bollywood films in Pakistan. Also, several million Pakistanis in West Asia, Europe and America are a regular audience for Bollywood films," the Professor once explained in an English-language daily.
