Breaking! Chief Election Commissioner on Telangana polls
Chief Election Commissioner OP Rawat has said today that assembly elections will NOT be held in Telangana along with Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chattisgarh and Mizoram later this year if the preparedness of the poll machinery is not satisfactory.
He added that elections can be held in January or February next year. The state has time up to March 5 next year for the constitution of a new Assembly, he has been quoted as saying.
"The other states (mentioned in the first para) have been preparing for polls for over two months, whereas Telangana was preparing for the Lok Sabha polls (till recently). But how far they are prepared, it will be assessed by the EC team," he has said.
"The apex court says elections must be held at the first instance after the dissolution of a state assembly and should not be delayed more than six months," Rawat has told a news agency.
It may be noted that the CEC has not at all ruled out polls in this year. He has only made an 'IF' statement.
