Bullet trains are not needed, says Metro Man

Bullet trains are one of Narendra Modi government's dreams.  E Sreedharan, the former Indian Engineering Service officer known as the Metro Man, opines that bullet trains "cater only to the elite community".

Saying that the travel in them will be "highly expensive", Sreedharan adds that India needs "modern, clean, safe and fast rail system" rather than bullet trains.

At a time when railways are said to have changed under the Modi regime, thanks to the efforts of Suresh Prabhu in the past and Piyush Goyal later, Sreedharan notes that no technical upgrade has taken place in Indian Railways.

"Speed has not increased. In fact, the average speed of most prestigious trains has come down," he informs.
