Congress says Modi is duping farmers
Most recently, the Narendra Modi government announced an increase in the Minimum Support Prices for Kharif crops, including rice, ahead of the 2019 elections. This was expected, given that farmers are a crucial vote bank.
The MSP for paddy has been hiked by Rs 200 per quintal. This entails a burden of Rs 15,000 crore (additional). MSP for paddy was raised by Rs 170 a quintal in the 2012-13 by the UPA government ahead of elections. "Earlier introduced effective crop insurance for farmers and now this historic jump in MSP is testimony to Modi govt's commitment towards Sabka Saath-Sabka Vikas. Unlike previous govts whose schemes remained only on files & on their manifestos, Modi sarkar is delivering on the ground," BJP President Amit Shah has said, backing the government's decision.
While the bragging about its latest decision, the Congress is slamming Modi. The hike is below the recommended level and that the overall track record of the Modi government in effecting MSP hikes has been nothing compared to that of the UPA, the Congress claims.
"While Modi Ji announces MSP, he forgets his own statement of 20 June, when addressed the Farmers via NaMo App. He had said land revenue, pesticide, irrigation, fuel, machinery, animal husbandry, urea, electricity - all these costs should be added. But these not added," notes Congress' Rachit Seth.
