COVID-19: Should stadiums become hospitals?
Turn cricket stadia and other stadia into makeshift hospitals. This is the demand many are making at a time when India is staring at thousands of COVID-19 cases in the coming weeks and months. No matter how much we control the spread, eventualities are unpredictable when we are dealing with a highly infectious disease.
An Indian Express report says that India has got just one isolation bed per 84,000 people, and one quarantine bed per 36,000 people. There is just one hospital bed per 1,826 Indians.
Given this, makeshift hospitals are the only way to go.
Apart from this, ventilators should be manufactured on a war-footing. "The Tatas and the Birlas can produce them if the government asks," an expert says.
