Don't Indian women already breastfeed in public?
There is a new narrative around the idea of breastfeeding in public in order to remove the stigma attached to the very normal and healthy practice. While sections of media and feminists want the idea to be given a boost in every way possible, there are others who are saying that Indian women have always done it in the open.
Says journalist Chitra Subramaniam, "Millions of women breastfeed in public in India. They build our homes, offices, roads and gated communities, carrying bricks and cement. They also till our lands so we can eat. Spare a thought for them, faux feminists. Thank you."
Columnist Pratyasha Rath has this to say: "In India, there is no stigma around breastfeeding that you need a 'breastfeeding pride' sort of movement to feel relevant. Women have been doing it since ages and will continue to do it."
