Dr. Surjit Bhalla appointed ED of IMF
Well-known economist and newspaper columnist Dr. Surjit S Bhalla has been appointed as the Executive Director (India) of the International Monetary Fund. He had previously served as an advisor to the Modi government. Also a psephologist who is known for mostly accurate predictions, he is a proponent of anti-Left economic policies.
Hailing his appointment, columnist Harsh Gupta says, "Bhalla is probably the best Indian public policy economist today, and one of the best globally. Very good on both intuition/experience and empirics, and with a feel for the markets, he is one of the rare scholars and authors who forces you to think afresh. Congrats sir!"
Bhalla is one of the few noteworthy proponents of the reduction of policy/repo rates. He has often criticized the RBI for not reducing the interest rates even though inflation has been contained successfully. He recently welcomed Nirmala Sitharaman's decision to slash down corporate rates.
