In a tragic turn of events, the rape of Asifa, an eight-year-old Jammu & Kashmir girl, has become a Hindu-Muslim issue in the Himalayan state, and for many polarized sections of India's society in other states, too.
While Asifa was raped because she was a Muslim (and the barbaric act should be condemned by one and all), it's wrong to say that sections of Muslim communities are being terrorized in J&K. One isolated instance shouldn't be used to paint whole villages as communal-minded bigots.
It's also important not to blindly buy one-sided narratives that are selectively peddled by agenda-driven editors/activists/politicians. Says Abhijit Majumder, "It’s sickening to not seek #JusticeforAsifa, the 8-year-old girl horrifically raped and killed in Kathua. It’s also sickening when some of us keep quiet about the Class 5 girl raped and burnt to death in Nagaon since the accused’s religion didn’t fit the narrative they peddle."
