Harassing Sidhu is wrong

A Muzzafarpur-based lawyer has filed a sedition case against cricketer-turned-politician Navjot Singh Sidhu for hugging the Pakistan Army chief when he was recently to the neighbouring country to attend Imran Khan's swearing-in ceremony.

On his part, Sidhu has said that he went to Pakistan not as a politician.  He asked as to why Narendra Modi is not questioned for visits to the country.  Sidhu was seated in the front row during the ceremony.  "I was told about the seat change only in the last minute," Sidhu said, defending himself.  To make the matters worse, Sidhu was seated next to the President of PoK!

Civil society voices have slammed the sedition case against the poor Sidhu.  "A case of sedition against Sidhu for a hug is a classic example of why sedition laws are so problematic. Any stringent law requires judicious and wise users - no one sensible can argue that there are many of those to be found," noted author Hindol Sengupta.
