Hima Das faces English apartheid
English-language apartheid is widespread in India. If you know good English, you are more competent than you actually are. If you are not English-savvy, you are less qualitative than you actually are.
The other day, none other than the national champion Hima Das was at the receiving end of such apartheid. A tweet made by Athletics Federation of India said this about her: "Not so fluent in English but she gave her best there too." This the body said while posting an interview of Hima.
The tweet has since drawn widespread flak and rightly so. "I am extremely saddened by this mention of her English skills. We are athletes and I request humbly with folded hands to judge us as athletes and not as English language experts. If you can't do it then go and criticise all English speakers for their bad running skills....!" commented one athlete.
Hima Das is not an English teacher for us to talk about her fluency. In the past, the likes of Milkha Singh, too, were ridiculed for their lack of fluency in the language.
