The Congress and six other Opposition parties are once again seeking to move an impeachment motion against the Chief Justice of India, Dipak Misra. Already, 64 Parliamentarians have signed the notice for impeachment proceedings. These MPs are also from the NCP, CPM, CPI, SP, BSP and Muslim League. The move has been seen as political and cynical. The parties, led by the Congress, are perceived to be trying to malign the judiciary for its decision to strike down the demand for an investigation into the death of CBI judge BH Loya. Says senior journalist Kanchan Gupta, "The Congress knows the impeachment motion against CJI will fail. But that is not the issue. The purpose is to let judges know what awaits them if they dare rule against the Congress's wishes. This is political blackmail by another name. Sadly, judges have only brother judges to blame."
