Imran Khan to choose dangerous man as NSA?
Is the Pakistan Prime Minister, Imran Khan, intending to choose a hardcore strategist as his country's National Security Adviser? That's the question some commentators are asking. If a 'Dwan' report published in mid-February is anything to go by, the answer is a big 'Yes'.
"Imran Khan is considering appointing Ijaz Shah as NSA. He is a hardcore extremist and handler of Hafiz Saeed, Mullah Omar and Daniel Pearl’s murderer. This ex-ISI officer helped hide bin Laden and is a suspect in Benazir's assassination," says Brahma Chellaney, a defence expert.
Note that this move was under Imran Khan's consideration days before the Balakot airstrikes. Maybe, after the February 26 shock therapy by India, things have hopefully changed in Pakistan. There has been so much international pressure on Pak to control terrorism. An extremist may not be chosen as its NSA at this juncture.
