Kerala Flood Relief: India may deny UAE' assistance
Right since 2004, India has been following a policy of graciously refusing to accept foreign aid for natural disasters. This not only makes a diplomatic sense but also emphasizes India's self-reliance as a policy.
Reportedly, Dr. Manmohan Singh declined to receive a huge offer of foreign aid when the deadly Tsunami struck India in 2004. In 2013, the Centre declined any aid for Uttarakhand in the wake of worst floods.
It may be noted that India donates to other, needy countries more than what it receives as foreign aid year after year. It is in this context that India's refusal to accept UAE's offer of Rs. 700 Cr to Kerala should be seen. In public life, not everything is measured in monetary terms.
