Kiran Bedi's World Cup tweet angers many
Moments after France was crowned world champion after defeating the Croatian team in the World Cup final in Moscow on Sunday, Puducherry Governor Kiran Bedi's tweet caught many by surprise.
"We the Puducherrians (erstwhile French Territory) won the World Cup. Congratulations Friends. What a mixed team-all French. Sports unites," the former IPS officer said.
After Bedi made this tweet, many wondered if she would have said India won the World Cup had England been the champion.
Former UPA minister Ajay Maken called for her resignation. "This statement of Kiran Bedi is unacceptable and is definitely anti-national. Narendra Modi ji should recall her immediately. May consider Dr. Harshvardhan, Manoj Tiwari or Vijay Goel as a replacement!" he said.
For her part, Bedi defended herself indirectly in her later tweets. "We in Puducherry wanted France to win the World Cup as the UT of Puducherry has a very memorable historical bond with France. Thousands of Puducherrians have maintained close ties with France. France also generously supports Puducherry in several ways," she said.
