Mani Ratnam's 'Nawab' story revealed
Mani Ratnam is believed to have adapted Tamil writer Kalki Krishnamurthy’s novel 'Ponniyin Selvan' into 'Nawab' ('Chekka Chivvantha Vaanam' in Tamil).
The film tells the story of how a character named Arulmozhivarman (who would later be known as Raja Raja Chola-I) became the king after the demise of his father Sundara Chola. This was preceded by intrigue and betrayal. Now, this Arulmozhivarman is played in the film by Simbu, who in the trailer is shown as a trigger-happy character. Simbu's character defeats Arvind Swamy's character (inspired by Aditya Karikalan's character in the novel) after a struggle.
Even the characters played by Vijay Sethupathy and Aditi Rao Hydari are very much there in the novel.
While the novel belonged to the historical genre, 'Nawab' is a gangster flick. The characters, their traits and the storyline is believed to be almost similar.
The film will hit the cinemas on September 28.
