Mother Teresa's organization charged to be criminal
A nun belonging to Mother Teresa-founded Missionaries of Charity has been arrested in Ranchi, Jharkhand, for allegedly trading in children for money. She reportedly took huge amounts from a couple who were seeking to adopt a child of an unwed mother. As per police accounts, this shocking racket at the reputed charitable organization has come to light when an unnamed couple approached the Child Welfare Committee against the Missionaries for cheating them.
Two other nuns have been detained in the case. As per some reports, the Shishu Bhavan of Missionaries of Charity has been extracting anything between Rs 40,000 to Rs 100,000 for each baby.
The incident has brought into question the state of affairs in India with respect to adoption. "This is routine. Nothing new about it. I was appointed chairman of Child Resource Adoption Agency when Maneka was minister for social welfare. Found adoption agency work a can of worms. She wouldn't allow transparency mechanisms. I resigned within 3-4 months," says activist and columnist Madhu Purnima Kishwar.
