'Murder attempt' on student leader Umar Khalid

Umar Khalid, the well-known Leftist student leader from Jawaharlal Nehru University in Delhi, was today allegedly attacked by unidentified gunmen near Parliament's Constitution Club.  He "escaped" unhurt and is "safe".

Delhi Police DCP Madhur Verma said, "The claim that Umar Khalid was attacked is being verified.  Somebody pounced on him and pushed, thereafter he tried to fire at Khalid. But couldn't. According to Khalid the attacker fired in the air and was chased by people."

Even as an investigation is on, fellow Communist student leader Shehla Rashi tweeted out, "Shocking and highly condemnable: a guy attacked Umar Khalid from behind and tried to shoot him in Delhi. This is the direct result of hatred whipped up by (TV channel's name withheld) and other hate media. I spoke to Umar. He's okay, but we should be very very worried about his safety."

Gujarat MLA Jignesh Mewani and others have condemned the attack.
