Nine killed in Tuticorin protests

Tuticorin in Tamil Nadu is on the boil.  Earlier today, protesters trying to reach Vedanta's Sterlite Copper unit were fired at by police, who wanted to enforce section 144 of CrPc that has been in force as per the orders of the Madras High Court.

A huge clash between local populace and the police led to mayhem.  About nine have been killed so far, as per several early reports.

"Vehicles and property, too, were damaged during the protest held in Tuticorin demanding a ban on Sterlite Industries, in the wake of the pollution created by them," says a news agency.

Kollywood celebs like Vishal have demanded a response from Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
