In a boost to the noble cause of achieving equality in Hinduism, Chilkur Balaji temple's priest CS Rangarajan on Monday famously carried a 25-year-old Dalit devotee at Ranganatha Swamy temple in Jiyaguda. This was in accordance with the Muni Vahana Seva, an age-old ritual that traces its origins to Tamil Nadu. Rangarajan did this noteworthy ritual to coincide with the 1,000th birth anniversary of philosopher Ramanucharya.
The Dalit devotee said on Monday that he had faced discrimination as a child just because of his caste.
Reform-minded Hindus have welcomed the step. "The true spirit of Hinduism - sending the message of equality across castes from our ancestors to modern India by re-enacting the ancient ritual of Muni Vahana Seva- a Dalit on the shoulders of the head priest. May the positive vibes purify the air," said a user on Twitter.
