Producer threatened 'Action King' Arjun
'Gentleman', the Shankar-directed social action-drama, completed 25 years on Monday. Marking the occasion, its producer KT Kunjumon, who had mortgaged his personal property to invest in the movie, has revealed an interesting thing.
When the movie was being made, Sri Lankan President Ranasinghe Premadasa was brutally assassinated by a young suicide bomber who came to the murder spot riding a cycle. This is when Gentleman's producer told director Shankar to rewrite the climax of the movie on the basis of the shocking incident. Shankar obliged. However, Arjun argued that an unimportant character killing the villain will diminish the hero's importance. Arjun refused the climax to be rewritten.
But the producer was adamant. "It's my money. If the film flops because of the climax, it's I who will have to pay the price," he said. He now threatened that the entire film's negatives will be burnt down and the film reshot with some other hero if Arjun doesn't agree to the new climax. This is when Arjun said OK, fearing that he might lose the film altogether!
