Rahul Gandhi set to do politics over Trump's statement?
"President Trump says PM Modi asked him to mediate between India & Pakistan on Kashmir! If true, PM Modi has betrayed India’s interests & 1972 Shimla Agreement. A weak Foreign Ministry denial won’t do. PM must tell the nation what transpired in the meeting between him and Potus," Rahul Gandhi said on Tuesday, wasting no time to drag Narendra Modi into the ongoing Trump-Kashmir row.
Rahul's tweet comes despite EAM S Jaishankar's statement in the Parliament that Modi made no request to Trump to mediate between the two countries to settle the Kashmir issue.
An impression is gaining ground that the Congress party wants to do politics over Trump's off-the-cuff, unverified and much-refuted comments.
Meanwhile, there is an increasing feeling that many want to take Trump's comment at face value. "For the pro-Pak lobby in India delirious over
Trump’s impromptu offer to “mediate” over J&K at presser with Imran Khan, here is a dampener — no one in the State Dept takes Trump’s impromptu statements seriously," says columnist Minhaz Merchant.
