UJALA has saved Rs. 50,000 CR
Speaking at an investors' summit in Lucknow, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday has said that the Unnat Jyoti by Affordable LEDs for All (UJALA) scheme of the NDA government has saved Rs. 50,000 cr in electricity bills. "In past three years, Rs 50,000 cr have been saved in electricity bills because of the LED bulbs were set up in households under Ujala scheme. If I had announced a concession of this amount, 'Wah Wah Modi' would have been the headlines for a week," the PM said.
The successful scheme seeks to save electricity, lower people's power bills and increase environmental well-being. Lower income groups and economically weaker sections have been incentivized to buy LEDs through monthly installments. As per latest data, about 30 crore LED bulbs have been sold in India in the last 36 months, that too at subsidized prices.
What it its environmental impact? As per a study, carbon emissions have been cut by as much as 30 million tonnes in just three years.
