Umar Khalid expelled, but what about his backers?
In February 2016, a few students of Jawaharlal Nehru University in New Delhi hosted a "cultural event" in memory of Afzal Guru, a convicted criminal in the 2001 Parliament attack case. Following this event, the University's authorities punished the student leaders Kanhaiya Kumar and Umar Khalid by imposing fines. They then went to Delhi High Court. Since then, as per the Delhi HC's orders, the varsity has appointed a high-level inquiry committee to look into the matter.
The authority has today said that Umar Khalid should be expelled. Kanhaiya Kumar has been slapped with a fine of Rs. 10,000.
However, this is not enough. "Good that JNU set an example by upholding Umar Khalid's rustication & a fine of Rs 10,000 imposed on Kanhaiya Kumar. But can someone in the PMO and the HMO explain why the mastermind and the Kashmiri separatist actors of the JNU "revolution" have not been arrested yet?" asks columnist Aarti Tikoo Singh.
