Were Telugus really the X-Factor?
More than a day after the results of Karnataka Assembly elections, it's a matter of controversy for many as to whether the Telugus hurted the BJP or not. The Hyderabad-Karnataka region is the only region where the saffron party's vote share was lesser than that of the Congress. Many political voices have claimed that it's because the Telugus mainly voted for the Congress or the JDS because they are angry with the BJP.
However, one has to always look at the previous performance to make comparisons. Says BJP's Ram Madhav, "In Karnataka, TDP and Chandrababu Naidu have used all tactics to dissuade Telugu voters from supporting BJP. But in Hyderabad Karnataka where most Telugus live, BJP has increased its tally from 6 to 15. People have rejected CBN’s politics."
What about Bengaluru? There too, Muslims and Christians seem to have dented the BJP's prospects, not any linguistic community in particular.
