BJP MP's anti-Christian remark draws flak
Gopal Shetty, a BJP Member of Parliament, yesterday said that the Christian community didn't contribute to India's freedom struggle. He even called the community 'Angrez' in a foot-in-the-mouth statement. Shetty went to the extent of saying that Christians were like the British. He made these uncritical and unthinking remarks at a Muslim gathering.
"It’s clear BJP MP is not aware of history, or is purposely trying to create discord among members of one community with such communally sensitive utterances," noted the Mumbai Congress in a statement.
"Annie Besant, Satyananda Stokes, Dina Bandhu, Madeline Slade, Rani Gaidinliu and many more Christians participated in our freedom struggle. A Christian Priest (Titus Ji) Is also seen with Bapu in 11 Murti at SP Marg, depicting Daandi March," said Shakeel Ahmad, a politician. The President of the Bombay Catholic Sabha opined that the MP's statements are an attempt to polarize minority votes.
Post the controversy, the BJP MP said, "My statement has been misrepresented. I have never discriminated against anyone. Still, I have informed state party president about my decision to resign to which he has asked me to meet him."
