Crying 'Emergency under Modi' is ridiculous
On Tuesday, the Maharashtra police conducted simultaneous raids across Mumbai, Hyderabad, New Delhi and other cities on the houses of human rights activists, lawyers and others. Varavara Rao, Gautam Navlakha, Sudha Bhardwaj, Arun Ferreira and Vernon Gonsalves have been arrested.
The Congress has dubbed the arrests in harshest terms. "The draconian arrests of Sudha Bharadwaj, Arun Fereira and Vernon Gonsalves & other human rights activists further substantiate the anti-democratic actions of the ruling govt. PM Modi’s ‘New India’ is nothing but a dictatorship wrapped in expensive advertising," the Grand Old Party has said.
The criticism is flawed. "This is incredible chutzpah. Many Left activists, incl some arrested now, were also locked up under UPA. Khobad Ghandy & GN Saibaba are still in jail. Armed Naxal leaders Azad & Kishen ji were killed in “black” operations. Look, who’s talking," columnist Shekhar Gupta said, calling out the Congress.
It may be noted that Arun Ferreira was jailed during UPA's rule, Vernon (in whose house 20 detonators and 9 gelatin sticks were found) was convicted under the UAPA Act during Manmohan Singh's prime ministership. Gautam Navlakha was detained in Srinagar in 2011. Rona Wilson was interrogated in 2005, Binayak Sen was arrested and convicted during the Singh era.
