Food inflation increases, Opposition targets govt
Retail inflation was at 7.59% in January, the latest data points say.  As per economic data, this is because of the high prices of vegetables, pulses and protein-rich items like meat and fish.  This is the first time inflation was this high in 5.5 years.

The Congress party is training guns on the Modi government over this issue that affects the poor the most.  Former Union Minister Kapil Sibal said, "Patient unwell. Doctor missing. Retail Inflation near 6 year high: 7.59%.  Price jumps: Vegetables 50.19%, Pulses: 16.71%, Food & beverages: 11.79%, Meat & fish: 10.50%, Eggs: 10.41%. Yogi Adityanath said: "Goli maro". Slogan should be: "Kkaam karo yaaro"."

The Congress party said that "falling economic growth and glaring slowdown with uncontrollable inflation is the hallmark of Modi governance."  It also pooh-poohed the "rising cylinder prices".
