Rugby legend Gareth Thomas reveals he has HIV
Gareth Thomas, the legendary rugby skipper of Wales, has revealed that he was diagnosed with HIV infection a few years ago. A gay, he is married to a man named Stephen. His husband is HIV negative.
The sporting champion said in a video message that he thought of committing suicide by jumping off a cliff in 2018. Gareth has been on medication (for the starters, Anti-Retroviral Therapy can prevent HIV from turning into AIDS) and his viral load is now undetectable.
He had to come out in the open about his condition because a media house got to know about his HIV status and sent reporters to his parents' home. Says Elizabeth Pears, "Gareth was forced to consult legal representatives and speak out about his diagnosis after a tabloid newspaper found out about his HIV status and sent reporters to his parents’ home. This is not journalism. They should be ashamed of themselves."
