Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani has come in for trolling after he announced that the name of Dragon Fruit has been changed to Kamalam. He explained it away by saying that the outer shape of the fruit resembles a lotus and that's why the name-change was necessitated.
"The state government has decided to rename Dragon Fruit. As the outer shape of the fruit resembles a lotus, Dragon Fruit shall be renamed as 'Kamalam'," ANI quoted the BJP leader as saying.
Social media is both shocked and puzzled. Many have criticized the government for getting its priorities wrong, that too during a pandemic. Others said that the Gujarat CM has at least saved himself from national embarrassment by making the name-change revelation on a day when India scored a historic victory against the Australian cricket team in Gabba. Advaid, a social media influencer, wrote, "Dragon fruit is a plant native to Latin America, just like Potato, Tomato, Papaya, Avacado, Pineapple & Chilli. You can name it Kamalam or Dhokla, but you can't change its historical origins."
