The Telangana government on Monday issued a Government Order allowing theatres, cinema halls and multiplexes in the State to be reopened with immediate effect. The GO has been treated as some sort of a sop.
Theatres have been the last ones to be reopened in the country. The Centre allowed them to operate from October 15. Some States have been cautious, believing that theatres can be super-spreaders. For one thing, there is no evidence that any theatre anywhere in the world has caused a super-spreading event since the onset of the coronavirus pandemic. For another, Telangana has been late in implementing something that was allowed more than a month ago by the Centre.
Any which way you see it, the GO is not a sop or a pro-active incentive. In itself, it doesn't add anything in terms of relief to aid the ailing exhibition sector. It's the starting point of a revival and just that.
