India is 57th most innovative country
The Global Innovation Index rankings, brought out every year by Cornell University, INSEAD and the UN World Intellectual Property Organisation and GII Knowledge Partners, has said that India is the 57th most innovative country in the world. Last year, India was at No. 60. In 2015, it was at No. 81.
"From 81st in 2015 to 54th last year, this quantum jump is largely possible due to Startup India program of PM Narendra Modi," says scientist Vijay Chauthaiwale.
This improvement in ranking is despite the fact that a number of India's innovations (for example in software) are "not easily captured" by the GII rankings.
On the flip side, despite India being a top exporter of IT services, it's a poor performer when it comes to the use and access of information and communication technologies within the country.
