By now, everyone who has heard about Jio Fiber's First-Day-First-Show believes that Mukesh Ambani has sent shockwaves across the cinema ecosystem, especially the exhibitors. By mid-2020, Jio will make home viewing of new releases possible under its broadband services package. When it happens, it will change the game in the long term.
Once consumers get the luxury of watching fresh releases on TV or laptop right from the first day, footfalls will substantially fall across multiplexes and single screens. Won't it be a big deal? It seems to be a big YES.
But not everything is lost for them. From PVR to Inox, they know that the film producers out there will have to comply with the "exclusive window period" norm by which they can't sell the rights of movies to Jio or anybody else for 8 weeks. "This is the norm internationally as well," a report quotes an INOX executive saying.
