Justice is not an act of revenge: CJI Bobde
Chief Justice of India Sharad Arvind Bobde today said that the criminal justice system in India has to shed its lackluster performance. Indirectly referring to the Disha-related encounters in Hyderabad, the new CJI suggested that the solution lies in long-lasting reforms.
"Recent events in the country have sparked off the old debate with new vigour. There is no doubt that the criminal justice system must reconsider its position & attitude towards laxity and eventual time it takes to dispose off criminal matters. But, I don't think justice can ever be or ought to be instant. And justice must never ever take the form of revenge. I believe justice loses its character of justice if it becomes an act of revenge," the CJI said.
"There is a need in judiciary to invoke self-corrective measures. Whether those self-corrective measures should be publicized or not can be a matter of debate," he added.
