Modi strikes fear in bureaucrats through compulsory retirement
Consider the below facts:
1. Fifteen officers of the Central Board of Excise and Customs (CBEC) were given compulsory retirement earlier this week.
2. Earlier, 12 officers of the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) were shown the door.
3. Hundreds of experts from the private sector have been inducted in the middle-level bureaucracy.
The Narendra Modi government is reportedly working hard to stem "deadwood" in the bureaucracy. Those who have been charged with corruption or other misconducts have been compulsorily retired. More heads will roll, at this rate.
These steps have struck fear in many bureaucrats. They have to perform, come clean, acquire knowledge, and also withstand the competition from private sector-sourced domain experts. Can this momentum be sustained? That's the question.
