The truth about govt controlling AC temperature
Most recently, the Union Power Ministry infamously advised Air Conditioner manufacturers to regulate default AC settings in a quest to promote energy efficiency. The default temperature setting proposed by the NDA government is 24 degrees Celsius.
There has been a hue and cry over this directive. It has been seen as an instance of "state overreach". How can the government decide how much temperature we should live in, critics have asked.
The truth is that the Centre has no plans to place any out-of-bounds controls in the name of energy efficiency. "From what I understand, the proposal is to make this a 'default setting' (This has been done in some other countries as well). It's NOT a 'locked setting'! You are welcome to adjust it to 22 C or even 18 C (or 28 C) with just a few clicks," says a commentator.
