"Babu Gogineni is a seditionist", says police
In yet another instance of the misuse of the anti-sedition law in India, rationalist and human rights champion Babu Gogineni has been accused of sedition.
It all began with a Hyderabad resident named Veera Narayana Chowdary petitioning in a court that Gogineni offends religious sentiments with his comments. He was also accused of collecting Aadhar numbers of his audience against the violation of UIDAI guidelines. Following a court direction, the Madhapur police recently slapped cases under various sections against the public figure.
While the rationalist has been charged under 11 sections or laws in total, the sweeping one pertains to the charges pressed under the anti-sedition law. His fellow travelers, human rights activists, intellectuals and scholars will come under the platform of the Jana Vignana Vedika on Friday to rally support for him.
