How MGR resorted to self-promotion ?
MG Ramachandran, one of the greatest film-political personalities India has ever seen, was damn good at promoting himself. MSS Pandian, an author, writes how the former Tamil Nadu chief minister made himself not only hugely popular by resorting to unique propaganda tricks but also by having it done even when he was physically ill.
"Rural cinemas were pressured into playing his films and his tape-recorded public speeches were played repeatedly. Inexpensive biographies of MGR, providing graphic details of his early life and poverty, were sold in village fairs and urban markets," writes Pandian.
"His onscreen invincibility was reinforced by various kinds of media, so much so that he was conferred a degree of immortality in real life as on the screen," he continues.
Needless to say, MGR was a master when it came to promoting himself.
