Sophia's arrest shocks many
Lois Sofia is a 28-year-old writer and mathematician who is studying in Canada. She was recently travelling to Tuticorin by air. Unfortunately for her, Tamil Nadu BJP president Tamilisai Soundararajan was also in the same plane. Upon spotting her, Sofia felt like saying 'Down Down' to the alleged "fascism" of the RSS-BJP combine. And she did raise a slogan as she couldn't restrain herself in the plane! An alarmed BJP president complained to the police, who have booked her under IPC sections dealing with causing public nuisance and alarm. A 15-day judicial custody has been imposed upon her.
The arrest of Sofia has shocked sections of civil society members, who are saying that it's nothing but undemocratic to arrest a citizen for raising a slogan. "If shouting against ministers or governments is a crime, I can think of a couple of TV news channels as eminent candidates for detention," said columnist Madhavan Narayanan.
"Indian Air Safety Law. Sofia might indeed be in trouble. Request @DrTamilisaiBJP to please withdraw her complaint; save this young student's career from being ruined by her harmless but stupid mistake," said scientist-columnist Anand Ranganathan.
